WORKSHOP 3 – MUSIC & DISABILITY

 Rosetta DebattistaROSETTA

 A graduate of the Royal College of Music and the University of Surrey (M.A. Music Therapy), Rosetta Debattista has worked as an educator, therapist and performer for thirty years.

As a performer, Rosetta has worked in the UK, Italy, Denmark, Germany and Malta with Maltese and International soloists. She has played locally on numerous occasions, at the President’s Palace, Teatru Manoel, San Gorg Basilica in Gozo, Sagrestia Vaults, The Mediterranean Conference Centre and St. James’ Centre for Creativity apart from regular invitations to perform at private events and embassies.

Rosetta co-ordinated several musical projects including the Caravaggio concerts at Caraffa Wharf, Vittoriosa. She has been vocal coach and/or music director for several locally-produced musicals including Side by Side by Sondheim, Company, Honk, Oliver and Chicago. She initiated the project, Minigig, bringing live music to towns and villages on the island and was the Arts Education Consultant for Teatru Manoel between 2011 and 2018 where she launched and ran Teatru Manoel’s Toi Toi educational programme.

She initiated several programmes and inspired numerous performers to create pieces that were successfully produced and performed. Over the years, she instigated numerous projects within Resource Centres and residential homes. She was a founding member of CATs, the Creative Arts Therapy Society and had initiated the first Music Therapy Programme at the Eden Foundation. She was also at the helm of a Valetta 2018 educational programme Sounds Out Loud and ONE VOICE as part of the Joseph Calleja BOV program, reaching out to several communities. She was associate director for an opera in Kuwait during 2018/19 and has recently taken on the role of Artistic Director at Teatru Salesjan while continuing to work on special projects at the Malta School of Music.

 Workshop Outline

‘Music is your own experience, your thoughts, your wisdom…”Charlie Parker

Led by experienced music therapist, Rosetta Debattista, this workshop will look at ways to collaborate as a creative team. It will facilitate opportunities within a safe space to further develop improvisation skills, looking at improvising approaches and techniques. It aims to provide participants with the skills and tools to increase sensitivity in their work and ‘listen’ more intently to their group.
